Shamrock Celebrates Features Christmas Day Focus on Business Shamrock Celebrates 22 Dec, 2011 11:13 AM The then-new hotel, designed by Philip Kennedy and completed in 1897, is described in Frank Cusack’s The History of Hotel Shamrock as being “lit throughout with electricity. Every room had its electric bell and hot and cold water. Magnificent Fireplaces graced every room. Bathrooms were fitted with marble baths. The very latest methods of fireproofing had been introduced.” Royalty, dignitaries and other famous people have called on her to visit or stay. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visited in 1934 and Prince and Princess of Wales graced the hotel in 1983. Others included Dame Nellie Melba, Billy Hughes, Alfred Deakin, and Richard Strauss. AWARD WINNERS JIM Smith - general manager of the Hotel Shamrock since May this year - is ecstatic about the awards and says the judging is quite tough and the criteria broad, with a range of categories and sub-categories covering things like staff and service, beverages, menu and telephone technique. “These awards from the AHA are prestigious. It’s a lengthy detailed process,” he says. “For the overall award we are judged on all aspects of the hotel.” Jim has worked in hospitality, mainly in the club environment, on and off for the last 26 years.
