Posted: Thursday, December 8, 2011 12:00 pm Bird sculpture to go way of the dodo by Paula Neudorf, Associate Editor Queens Chronicle | 0 comments While most in Long Island City will greet the news that Murray Playground is set to undergo a $1.3 million renovation this year with good cheer, one long-time resident is less than thrilled with a particular aspect of the Parks Department’s plan: namely, the removal of a sculpture he made that has been in the park since 1986. “It’s really a historic artifact,” sculptor Dan Sinclair said of the work, a 25 foot tall, origami-like yellow structure called “Bigger Bird.” “It’s a symbol of when Long Island City was really an artists’ community.” Sinclair has been in the neighborhood since 1979, when he moved there with his family after 10 years abroad in Italy.
