Rich Leonard presided over his usual docket of bankruptcy hearings, he also immersed himself in the world of 19th century architecture and design, obsessing over paint colors, carpet patterns, and period light fixtures. The result of Leonard's long obsession - and of the hard work of scores of other devoted architects, contractors, and millworkers - is the beautiful reconstruction and renovation of historic courtrooms and meeting rooms in the Federal Building on Fayetteville Street. The Federal Building, which houses the downtown Raleigh post office and federal bankruptcy courts, was a marvel when it was completed in 1878, boasting 19 Fireplaces, rich mahogany trim, and what many believe to be the city's first indoor toilets. Over the years, sections of the building fell into disrepair, and the third floor eventually was closed. When the state needed new courtroom space for an additional bankruptcy judge, Leonard looked upstairs. What he found was a space that had been largely empty

During the winter, wood smoke is the leading cause of wintertime air pollution in the Bay Area, according to air-quality officials. The lack of rain this winter has contributed to frequent alerts, as The Bay Citizen has reported. "In general, storms bring good air quality, because they mix air that's closer to the ground with air that's high up," Jennifer Jones, a public information officer for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, told The Bay Citizen. "It helps dilute or disperse pollution." When the weather is dry and cold, and there is little or no wind, the small particles from wood-burning fires become trapped under a layer of warmer air in the atmosphere. This particulate matter can irritate the lungs, increasing the risk of serious health problems like pneumonia and blood clots. The elderly and children are especially at risk from such pollution. Loudoun County's luxury market turns a corner

Loudoun County's luxury market exploded, with hundreds of $1 million-plus homes selling each year. But with the housing market crash, the luxury market took a hit. The upper end of the market peaked in 2005 with 338 homes over $1 million sold, and bottomed out in 2009 with 50 homes at that price range sold. But last year, that number started to rise again. In 2011, 62 homes sold for $1 million or more, and nine days into 2012, there are 12 homes in that category under contract. Last year in January, I did a wrapup post of the most expensive homes sold in Loudoun County for 2010. So let’s take a look at the top 2011 luxury homes sales in Loudoun. The top five homes sold, not unlike 2010, were all just about in the $2 million and above price range. 11409 Coyote Court, Sterling. $1,950,000.
