No Burn Days Saturday, Sunday in Phoenix Updated: Saturday, 31 Dec 2011, 3:01 PM MST Published : Saturday, 31 Dec 2011, 2:34 PM MST PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a High Pollution Advisory for Saturday and Sunday for the metro Phoenix area. The Maricopa County Air Quality Department is enforcing mandatory No Burn Day restrictions over the New Year's holiday weekend. No Burn Day regulations mean residents and businesses must refrain from burning wood in Fireplaces, woodstoves or outdoor fire pits. This includes individuals and businesses that have burn permits for open burning. Grilling activities and gas powered Fireplaces activity is allowed on a No Burn Day. The air quality forecast suggests stagnant air, relatively low wind and winter inversions will trap fine particulate pollution close to the ground. In a brief statement on the final day of the trial, the Goteborg District Court said the men, aged 24-26 and of Somali and Iraqi origin, were no longer in detention. It did not give any reasons for its decision, saying only that it will disclose more information when the verdict is announced on Jan. 20. But typically such a decision means that the court either won’t convict the defendant or that there is little, or no reason, for keeping a person detained for fear that the suspect might run away or destroy evidence. Prosecutor Agnetha Hilding Qvarnstrom has accused the suspects of planning to stab Vilks at an art event in Goteborg, Sweden’s second largest city. The men carried knives when they were arrested on Sept. 10, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, and an art gallery was evacuated in connection with the arrests. Vilks had written on his blog that he planned to visit the event, but did not attend that night. Police originally treated the case as a terror investigation, but later re-labeled it a murder plot. All three suspects have denied the charges. Vilks’ 2007 drawing led to several threat

By: Carol Pierson Holding A Tacoma-Pierce County, WA Task Force just sent its recommendations to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency about how to reduce soot in the air to meet EPA standards. The soot is created partly by diesel vehicles and industry, but the most (53 percent) is from wood burning stoves and Fireplaces. I remember the ongoing struggle over Fireplaces and the particulate pollution they create from my days in New York City. The concern has spread nationally too. As the New York Times reported last January, sales of wood stoves and Fireplaces have dropped dramatically over the last decade. The Times attributes this drop at least in part to the growing ambivalence towards wood fires. But now that I’m in the Pacific Northwest, I find a different ethos about wood stoves and Fireplaces.

That's roughly 43,000 house fires a year that can be prevented. The Chimney Safety Institute of America and the National Fire Protection Association recommend that all chimneys, Fireplaces and dryer vents be inspected at least annually. "Many homeowners think their chimney only needs to be cleaned and inspected if they burn wood in their Fireplaces or wood stoves," said the institute's Ashley Eldridge, "but almost all heating appliances, whether they burn gas, oil, wood or coal, rely on the chimney to safely carry toxic gases produced by the heating system of the house." Lint and other debris that build up in clothes dryer vents can also create potentially hazardous conditions including carbon monoxide intrusion and the possibility for exhaust fires. Air clears, Reno wood-burning ban lifted Share The Associated Press Last modified: 2011-12-20T19:09:37Z Published: Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011 - 11:09 am Copyright 2011 . All rights reserved. RENO, Nev. -- Washoe County health officials say the air quality in the Reno area has improved enough to lift restrictions on wood-burning. The health district rescinded the Red Burn Code it issued on Monday, raising the code to Green by Tuesday morning. That means it is okay to use Fireplaces, wood stoves and pellet stoves. Officials say a strong temperature inversion that trapped pollutants close to the ground was responsible for the elevated levels of fine particulate air pollution. They say the cutback on burning on Monday combined with the winds picking up helped clear the air. A graduate of the University of North Carolina and the daughter of Bart and Napier Hill of Bakersfield, Paige penned a moving valentine to our sometimes quirky and always endearing community. In her words: "The fog is something I can try to describe in a series of corny colloquialisms, but I ultimately fail to capture it. Bakersfield is like that, too. It's a city where in the same breath its residents will knowingly laugh and admit it is no cultural rival of San Francisco - and then fiercely defend it for what it is. It is ours." An Efficient Holiday Season: Eco Entertaining
An Efficient Holiday Season: Eco Entertaining December 16th, 2011 › Clean Energy, Energy Efficiency › Jeannie McKinney › I wanted to wrap up our holiday series by addressing a final, major seasonal activity that is generally high in energy consumption: holiday entertaining. I know that party planning can be a daunting task at times, and just having a few relatives and friends over for a quiet evening can require hours of preparation. There’s always cleaning and decorating to be done, food to be made, possible gifts to manage, and piles of supplies to purchase beforehand. With all you have to do, there can be very little time leftover for energy considerations. In terms of party planning, the last couple blogs in our holiday series should have given you a few useful tricks for making some of your preparations more energy-conscious. If you haven’t already, take a look at these posts to help you make use of more efficient cooking methods, gifting and shopping ideas, and environmentally-friendly decorating options. In addition to those ideas, though, I have just a little more information I’d like to share with you for greening up your holiday activities and events. This year, maybe you can take some time to consider how you can make your seasonal gatherings put less stress not only on yourself, but on the power grid as well. Make use of e-invites before the party. While this one is slightly controversial as it requires a computer and electricity, the process of sending an

Exploring the Newport Coast: An Inspirato experience RealAspen News and Community Content Feed By Troy Hooper Real Aspen – December 13, 2011 Even before we rolled our car past the regal gates gazing wide-eyed at the villas punctuating the sun-drenched slopes that gently roll down to the Pacific, it was clear this night's stay would be different. Weeks earlier, a woman calling herself our “villa coordinator” contacted me asking whether we would be reserving a pool-side cabana, if she could stock our kitchen with groceries, book a private chef, arrange a tee time, or a spa appointment, and so on.
