Cold Weather Brings Chimney Fires Updated: Tuesday, 06 Dec 2011, 11:18 AM MST Published : Tuesday, 06 Dec 2011, 11:18 AM MST PHOENIX - Fire departments are finding that desert dwellers not used to the cold are turning to chimneys to stay warm -- and that's sparked a string of fires during the recent cold snap. Chimney fires were reported in Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert and Apache Junction. Chimney fires are caused when debris, resin, creosote and other chemicals build up over time and then ignite when homeowners use their Fireplaces for the first time in the fall. To prevent fires, keep your chimney clean and never leave your Fireplaces burning when you go to sleep.
