This should be done at the start of every heating season. If the slate hearth is looking a bit tired, treat it with Linseed oil to restore its lustre. Using a non-abrasive cloth to apply a weak mix of water and detergent will clean any surface dirt from a marble or limestone chimneypiece. If there is a Victorian grate in situ, it should be polished using graphite paste or Zebrite to revive its finish.
